Ingredients
Scale
- 1 package (12-14 oz) Smoked Turkey or Pork Sausage, sliced into rounds
- 1 medium head of Green Cabbage, shredded or chopped
- 1 large Yellow Onion, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves Garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons Butter or Vegetable Oil
- 1 tablespoon Apple Cider Vinegar
- 1 teaspoon Salt
- 1/2 teaspoon Black Pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon Smoked Paprika (optional)
Instructions
- Start by slicing your smoked sausage into half-inch rounds. Remove the outer leaves of the cabbage, cut it in half, remove the core, and shred it into thin strips. Thinly slice the onion and mince the garlic. Having everything chopped and ready before you turn on the stove ensures the cooking process goes smoothly.
- Place a large skillet or cast-iron pan over medium-high heat. Add one tablespoon of butter or oil. Once melted, add the sliced sausage in a single layer. Brown the sausage for about 3-4 minutes per side until it develops a nice crust. This browning process adds a huge amount of flavor to the entire dish. Remove the sausage from the pan and set it aside on a plate.
- In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of butter. Toss in the sliced onions and cook for 3 minutes until they begin to soften. Add the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant. Now, add the shredded cabbage to the pan. It might look like a lot, but it will wilt down significantly. Stir frequently for 8-10 minutes until the cabbage is tender and starts to turn golden brown around the edges.
- Add the browned sausage back into the skillet with the cabbage. Pour in the apple cider vinegar; this helps deglaze the pan and cuts through the richness of the meat. Season with salt, pepper, and smoked paprika. Stir everything together and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. Taste and adjust seasonings if necessary.
- Spoon the mixture into shallow bowls. The dish is incredibly filling on its own, but you can serve it alongside a side of crusty bread or over a bed of white rice if you want to stretch the meal even further. Garnish with a bit of fresh parsley if you have some on hand for a pop of color.
- Cook Time: 30 minutes
