Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups 100% cranberry juice (unsweetened preferred)
- 1 cup orange juice (freshly squeezed)
- 2 cups water (or sparkling water for a cold version)
- 1/2 cup honey or maple syrup
- 3 cinnamon sticks
- 4 whole star anise
- 6 whole cloves
- 1 cup fresh cranberries
- 1 orange, thinly sliced
- Optional: 1 cup vodka, gin, or spiced rum for the boozy version
- Fresh rosemary sprigs for garnish
Instructions
- Wash the fresh cranberries and discard any soft ones. Slice the orange into thin rounds. If you want a more intense citrus flavor, lightly bruise the orange slices to release the oils from the peel. Place the cinnamon sticks, star anise, and cloves in a small bowl so they are ready to go.
- In a large pot, combine the cranberry juice, orange juice, water, and your chosen sweetener. Stir well to dissolve the honey or syrup. Add the cinnamon sticks, star anise, cloves, and half of the fresh cranberries. Place the pot over medium heat and bring it to a gentle simmer. Do not let it reach a rolling boil, as this can make the juice taste bitter. Let it simmer for about 10 to 15 minutes to infuse the spices.
- If you prefer a warm drink, keep the pot on low heat. For the nonalcoholic version, ladle the warm liquid into mugs and garnish with the remaining fresh cranberries and a slice of orange. For the boozy version, stir in your choice of alcohol just before serving. If you want a cold, sparkling version, let the spiced juice cool completely, then mix it with sparkling water and ice in highball glasses. Add a sprig of rosemary to each glass for a piney, festive aroma.
