Ingredients
Scale
- 12 oz fresh or frozen cranberries
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup orange juice
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, finely grated
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon orange zest (optional for extra punch)
Instructions
- Step 1: Preparation. Rinse the cranberries thoroughly in a colander. Pick through them and discard any berries that are soft, shriveled, or bruised. Peel the fresh ginger root using the edge of a spoon and grate it finely using a microplane or the small holes of a box grater. Measure out your sugar, orange juice, and water so everything is ready to go.
- Step 2: Simmering the Sauce. In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar, orange juice, water, and grated ginger. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally to ensure the sugar dissolves completely. Once the liquid is bubbling, add the rinsed cranberries and the pinch of salt. Reduce the heat to medium-low and let the mixture simmer for about 10 to 12 minutes.
- Step 3: Popping and Thickening. As the sauce cooks, you will hear the cranberries begin to “pop.” This is normal and means the pectin is being released, which naturally thickens the sauce. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking. Once most of the berries have burst and the liquid has thickened into a syrupy consistency, remove the pan from the heat. The sauce will continue to thicken significantly as it cools.
- Step 4: Cooling and Serving. Transfer the cranberry sauce to a glass bowl or serving dish. Let it cool to room temperature on the counter, then cover and refrigerate for at least two hours before serving. This chilling time allows the flavors to meld and the texture to set perfectly. Serve cold or at room temperature alongside your Christmas feast.
