Ingredients
Scale
- 1 (7-8 lb) Bone-in shank or butt portion ham
- 1 cup Packed brown sugar
- 1 can (20 oz) Pineapple slices in 100% juice
- 1/4 cup Honey or pancake syrup
- 1 teaspoon Ground cloves (optional)
Instructions
- Step 1: Preparation. Begin by lightly greasing the inside of a 6-quart or larger slow cooker with non-stick cooking spray or a slow cooker liner for easy cleanup. Remove all packaging from the ham, including the plastic disc often found on the bone. Place the ham into the crockpot. if the ham is too tall for the lid to close, trim a small slice off the bottom or cover the top tightly with a double layer of heavy-duty aluminum foil instead of the lid.
- Step 2: Adding the Glaze. Rub the brown sugar all over the surface of the ham, pressing it into the meat so it sticks. Open the can of pineapple slices and pour the juice directly over the ham. Arrange the pineapple slices on top and around the sides of the ham, securing them with toothpicks if necessary. Drizzle the honey or syrup over the top to create a glossy, sweet finish.
- Step 3: Cooking. Cover the slow cooker and set it to LOW heat. Cook for 4 to 5 hours. Cooking on low is essential to prevent the ham from drying out. Since the ham is already pre-cooked, you are simply heating it through and allowing the sugars to melt into a delicious glaze. Resist the urge to open the lid frequently, as this releases the steam needed to keep the meat juicy.
- Step 4: Slicing and Serving. Once the internal temperature reaches 140°F, carefully remove the ham from the crockpot and place it on a large serving platter. Let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing. While the ham rests, skim any excess fat from the liquid remaining in the pot and spoon those flavorful juices back over the sliced meat before serving to your guests.
