Ingredients
Scale
- 8 slices of thick-cut bread (Texas Toast or Brioche works best)
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for the custard)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon (for the topping)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- Maple syrup for serving
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Generously grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter or non-stick cooking spray. Take your thick-cut bread slices and cut each one into three equal-sized sticks. If the bread is very fresh, let the sticks sit out on the counter for a few minutes to slightly dry out; this helps them absorb the custard without becoming soggy.
- In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, and the 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon. Whisk vigorously until the eggs are fully incorporated and the mixture is smooth. This ensures an even coating on every piece of bread.
- Place the bread sticks into the prepared baking dish. You can line them up neatly or toss them in casually. Pour the egg and milk mixture evenly over the bread sticks. Use a spatula or your clean hands to gently toss the sticks, ensuring every side is coated in the liquid. Let them sit for about 2-3 minutes to soak up the custard.
- In a small bowl, mix the granulated sugar and the remaining tablespoon of cinnamon. Drizzle the melted butter over the top of the soaked bread sticks. Immediately sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture evenly across the top. This creates that signature “crunch” kids love.
- Place the dish in the center rack of the oven. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes. The sticks should look puffed up and golden brown, and the sugar topping should be bubbly and caramelized. Remove from the oven and let them cool for 2 minutes before serving.
- Transfer the sticks to individual plates or a large serving platter. Serve them warm with a side of maple syrup for dipping. You can also add fresh berries or a dusting of powdered sugar for an extra special touch.
- Cook Time: 35 minutes
