Ingredients
Scale
- 1 large pre-baked thin pizza crust (or 4 individual flatbreads)
- 1/2 cup high-quality marinara or pizza sauce
- 8 oz fresh mozzarella log (sliced into 1/4 inch rounds)
- 1/4 cup sliced black olives (cut into tiny bits for eyes)
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano or Italian seasoning
- Optional: Fresh basil leaves for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat to prevent sticking. While the oven heats up, slice your fresh mozzarella log into rounds. If you want a more “ghastly” shape, use a small paring knife to slightly pull the bottom of the cheese slices into a tail or use a ghost-shaped cookie cutter.
- Place your pre-baked pizza crust on the prepared baking sheet. Spoon the marinara sauce onto the center of the crust and spread it evenly toward the edges using the back of the spoon. Leave about half an inch around the border for a crispy crust. Sprinkle the dried oregano or Italian seasoning over the sauce for an extra burst of flavor.
- Place the mozzarella rounds onto the sauce, spacing them about an inch apart. These will be your ghosts. Do not crowd them too much, as the cheese will spread slightly during the baking process. At this stage, do not add the olive eyes yet, as they might sink or shift while the cheese melts.
- Slide the baking sheet into the oven and bake for 8 to 10 minutes. Watch closely; you want the cheese to be melted and just beginning to soften into ghost-like blobs, but not browned. The crust should be golden and crisp. Remove the pizza from the oven carefully.
- While the cheese is still hot and soft, place two small pieces of black olives onto the upper half of each mozzarella “ghost” to create the eyes. The residual heat will help the olive pieces stick perfectly. Let the pizza rest for 2 minutes to allow the cheese to set before slicing. Serve immediately while hot and spooky!
