Ingredients
Scale
- 1 can (14 oz) whole berry cranberry sauce
- 1/4 cup fresh orange juice
- 1 teaspoon orange zest
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar or honey (optional, for extra depth)
- A pinch of salt
Instructions
- Step 1: Combine the Base: Open the can of whole berry cranberry sauce and empty the contents into a small saucepan. Use a spoon or whisk to gently break up the solid shape of the sauce. Pour in the orange juice and add the orange zest, cinnamon, and optional sweetener. Stir everything together until the ingredients are well incorporated and the mixture looks uniform.
- Step 2: Simmer and Infuse: Place the saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir the mixture frequently to prevent the sugars from scorching on the bottom of the pan. Bring the sauce to a very gentle simmer. Let it cook for about 8 to 10 minutes. This process allows the flavors of the orange and cinnamon to meld with the cranberries and reduces the liquid slightly for a richer texture.
- Step 3: Cool and Serve: Remove the pan from the heat. The sauce will look slightly thin while hot, but it will thicken significantly as it cools. Transfer the sauce to a glass bowl and let it reach room temperature. For the best results, cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least two hours before serving. This chilling time helps the sauce set into a perfect, spoonable consistency.
