Ingredients
Scale
- 4 medium sweet potatoes (uniform in size)
- 3 tablespoons melted unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 cup mini marshmallows
- 1/4 cup chopped pecans (optional, for extra crunch)
- Fresh thyme sprigs (optional garnish)
Instructions
- Start by washing the sweet potatoes thoroughly. Place them in a large pot and cover with water. Bring the water to a boil and cook the potatoes for about 15 to 20 minutes, or until they are fork-tender but not falling apart. Drain the potatoes and let them cool for a few minutes until they are safe to handle. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or silicone mats.
- Place the whole boiled potatoes on the prepared baking sheet, leaving plenty of space between each one. Use a heavy-bottomed glass or a potato masher to gently press down on each potato until it is about 1/2-inch thick. In a small bowl, whisk together the melted butter, maple syrup, cinnamon, salt, and nutmeg. Brush this mixture generously over the top of each smashed potato, ensuring the seasoned butter gets into the cracks.
- Slide the baking sheet into the oven and roast for 25 to 30 minutes. You want the edges of the sweet potatoes to turn deep golden brown and become noticeably crispy. If you prefer even more crunch, you can carefully flip them halfway through the cooking time, though it is not strictly necessary. If using pecans, sprinkle them over the potatoes during the last 5 minutes of this roasting phase.
- Once the potatoes are crispy, remove the tray from the oven. Top each smashed potato with a handful of mini marshmallows. Switch the oven to the broil setting and place the tray back in for 1 to 2 minutes. Watch them very closely! The marshmallows will brown and puff up almost instantly. Remove from the oven as soon as they reach a toasted golden brown color. Serve immediately while the marshmallows are gooey and the potatoes are hot.
- Cook Time: 60 minutes
