Ingredients

4 large apples, peeled and sliced (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work well)

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/2 cup brown sugar, packed

1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

1 cup rolled oats

1/2 cup all-purpose flour (for the topping)

1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

A pinch of salt

Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream (for serving)

Instructions

Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) to get it nice and hot while you prepare the crisp.

Prepare the apples: In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples with lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, brown sugar, and 1 tablespoon of flour. Toss to coat the apples evenly in the mixture, then spread them evenly in a greased 9x13 inch baking dish.

Make the topping: In a separate bowl, mix the rolled oats, 1/2 cup of flour, brown sugar, melted butter, chopped nuts (if using), and a pinch of salt. Stir until the mixture is crumbly and uniform.

Combine: Evenly distribute the oat topping over the apple mixture in the baking dish.

Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown and crisp.

Serve: Let the apple crisp cool for a few minutes, then serve warm topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for an extra treat!
