The banana split is believed to have been invented in the early 1900s in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. The story goes that a young pharmacist named David Evans Strickler created the dessert as a way to attract more customers to his soda fountain. Strickler's creation was a hit, comprising a sliced banana served with three scoops of ice cream—one each of vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry—topped with various sauces and garnishes. This innovative treat quickly gained popularity, spreading from local diners to ice cream parlors across the country.

Ingredients

2 ripe bananas

2 cups vanilla ice cream

1 cup chocolate ice cream

1 cup strawberry ice cream

1/2 cup hot fudge sauce

1/4 cup strawberry syrup

1/4 cup crushed pineapple (drained)

1/2 cup whipped cream

1/4 cup chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans)

Maraschino cherries (for topping)

Chocolate shavings (for garnish)

Fresh mint leaves (for garnish)

Instructions

Prepare the Bananas: Peel the bananas and slice them in half lengthwise. Place each half in a long, shallow dish or individual serving bowls.

Add Ice Cream: Scoop one cup of vanilla ice cream and place it in between the banana halves. Follow with a scoop of chocolate ice cream and then a scoop of strawberry ice cream, gently placing them side by side.

Drizzle Sauces: Warm the hot fudge sauce slightly for easier drizzle. Pour the hot fudge sauce over the ice cream and bananas, followed by the strawberry syrup. Add the crushed pineapple on top of the slice.

Top with Whipped Cream: Generously dollop whipped cream over the entire dessert.

Garnish: Sprinkle the chopped nuts over the whipped cream. Add maraschino cherries on top of the whipped cream for a classic touch. Finish with some chocolate shavings and a sprig of fresh mint for a pop of color.
