Ingredients

8 cups day-old French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes

4 large eggs

2 cups whole milk

1 cup heavy cream

1 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional)

Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)

Vanilla ice cream, for serving (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.

Prepare the Bread: Place the bread cubes in a large mixing bowl. Set aside to allow them to stale a bit if they are not already.

Mix the Custard Base: In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and salt until well combined.

Combine Ingredients: Pour the custard mixture over the bread cubes. Gently fold in the semi-sweet chocolate chips and pecans if using, ensuring that all bread is coated in the mixture. Let it sit for about 15-20 minutes to allow the bread to soak up the liquid.

Transfer to Baking Dish: Pour the soaked bread mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading the bread evenly.

Bake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is set (a knife inserted in the center should come out clean).

Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and let it cool for at least 10 minutes. Dust with powdered sugar if desired. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top for extra indulgence.
