Ingredients

For the Dough:

4 cups all-purpose flour

1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) instant yeast

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

1 cup warm milk

2 large eggs

For the Filling:

1/2 cup brown sugar, packed

1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened

2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and diced (preferably Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)

For the Caramel Sauce:

1 cup brown sugar, packed

1/2 cup unsalted butter

1/4 cup heavy cream

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

A pinch of salt

For Topping:

1/2 cup pecans or walnuts, chopped (optional)

1 cup powdered sugar

2 tablespoons milk

Instructions

Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, yeast, sugar, salt, and cinnamon. In a separate bowl, mix melted butter, warm milk, and eggs. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms.

Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Make the Filling: In a small bowl, combine brown sugar and cinnamon. Roll out the dough into a rectangle (about 16x24 inches) on a floured surface. Spread softened butter evenly over the dough and sprinkle the brown sugar mixture, diced apples, and nuts (if using) on top.

Roll & Cut: Starting from one long side, roll the dough tightly into a log. Cut the log into 12 equal pieces and place them in a greased 9x13 inch baking dish.

Second Rise: Cover the rolls with a towel and let them rise again for about 30 minutes while you preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

Prepare the Caramel Sauce: In a saucepan over medium heat, combine brown sugar, butter, heavy cream, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Stir continuously until the mixture is smooth and bubbling. Let it simmer for a minute before removing it from heat.

Bake: Pour half of the caramel sauce over the risen cinnamon rolls. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.

Glaze the Rolls: After baking, let the rolls cool for 5 minutes. Whisk the powdered sugar with the milk to make a glaze and drizzle it over the warm cinnamon rolls.

Serve: Drizzle the remaining caramel sauce over the rolls just before serving. Enjoy warm!
