Ingredients

4 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and quartered

1 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup unsalted butter (1 stick)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 sheet puff pastry (thawed if frozen)

1 egg (for egg wash)

Sea salt flakes (for garnish)

Instructions

Prepare the Apples: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the apple quarters, sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Cook for about 10-15 minutes, turning occasionally, until the apples are caramelized and tender. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.

Caramelize the Apples: Pour the apple mixture into a 9-inch (23 cm) round oven-safe skillet, ensuring the apples are arranged nicely, cut side up.

Prepare the Puff Pastry: Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface. It should be larger than the skillet. Carefully place the pastry over the apples, tucking down the edges around the apples.

Egg Wash: Beat the egg in a small bowl. Brush the puff pastry with the egg wash to give it a beautiful golden finish.

Bake: Place the skillet in the preheated oven and bake for about 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is golden and puffed.

Cool & Invert: Once baked, remove the skillet from the oven. Let it cool for a few minutes before carefully inverting it onto a serving plate. Be cautious of the hot caramel that may ooze out.

Garnish: Sprinkling with sea salt flakes enhances the flavor! Allow it to cool slightly before serving.

Serving: Slice into wedges and serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for enhanced indulgence!
