Ingredients

3 medium-sized apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced

1/4 cup unsalted butter

1/2 cup packed brown sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup Greek yogurt or sour cream

1/4 cup milk

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Optional: whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for serving

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Prepare the Pan: In a 9-inch round cake pan, melt the butter on the stovetop or in the microwave. Once melted, sprinkle the brown sugar evenly over the melted butter. Spread it out to cover the bottom.

Add Spices: Sprinkle half of the ground cinnamon and nutmeg over the brown sugar mixture.

Layer Apples: Arrange the sliced apples evenly over the brown sugar mixture, overlapping them slightly to create a beautiful pattern. Sprinkle the remaining cinnamon and nutmeg over the apples.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt until combined. Set aside.

Combine Wet Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, cream together the granulated sugar and Greek yogurt (or sour cream) until smooth. Add the milk, eggs, and vanilla extract, mixing until well combined.

Incorporate Dry Ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture into the wet ingredients, stirring gently until just combined. Do not overmix.

Assemble the Cake: Pour the batter evenly over the arranged apples in the cake pan. Smooth the top gently with a spatula.

Bake: Place the cake in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the cake is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Cool and Flip: Once baked, remove the cake from the oven and let it cool for about 10 minutes. Then, carefully run a knife around the edges to loosen it. Place a serving plate over the pan and flip it upside down to release the cake.

Serve: Allow the cake to cool for a few minutes before slicing. Serve warm with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream if desired.
