To fully appreciate turtle bars, it's essential to explore their origins. The name "turtle" originates from the popular turtle candies, which are made from a combination of chocolate, caramel, and nuts, typically pecans. These candies were first created in the early 20th century and were named for their resemblance to the shape of a turtle. The sweet treats quickly gained popularity and evolved into various forms, including the famous turtle bars we know today.

Ingredients

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted

1 cup packed brown sugar

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 large eggs

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup chopped pecans

1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

1 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)

Sea salt for sprinkling

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line a 9x13 inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving some overhang for easy removal.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the melted butter, brown sugar, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract. Whisk until smooth and well combined.

Add in the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition until fully incorporated.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, stirring until just combined.

Fold in the chopped pecans and semi-sweet chocolate chips until evenly distributed.

Spread half of the batter evenly in the prepared baking pan, using a spatula to smooth it out. Bake for 15 minutes until slightly firm.

Remove the pan from the oven and drizzle half of the caramel sauce over the baked layer. Drop spoonfuls of the remaining batter over the caramel, being careful not to disturb it too much. Drizzle the remaining caramel sauce on top of that batter and swirl gently with a knife.

Sprinkle a little sea salt over the top for that extra touch of flavor.

Return to the oven and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out mostly clean.

Allow the bars to cool completely in the pan. Once cooled, lift them out using the parchment overhang and cut into squares.

Serve and enjoy your decadent turtle bars! Store any leftovers in an airtight container for up to a week.
