Ingredients

1 lb ground beef or Italian sausage

1 small onion, finely chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 bell pepper (red or green), diced

1 can (15 oz) crushed tomatoes

2 tbsp tomato paste

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

1 tsp dried oregano

1 tsp basil

1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)

Salt and pepper to taste

4 large pieces of garlic bread (or a loaf of Italian bread)

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Fresh basil leaves for garnish

Instructions

In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef or Italian sausage. Sauté until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula as it cooks. Drain excess fat if necessary.

Add the chopped onion, garlic, and diced bell pepper to the skillet. Cook for about 3-5 minutes until the vegetables are softened.

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Mix well to combine.

Lower the heat and let the mixture simmer for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens.

While the meat mixture simmers, preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

Place the garlic bread on a baking sheet. Toast in the oven for about 5-7 minutes until golden and crispy.

Remove the garlic bread from the oven. Spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture generously onto each slice of garlic bread.

Top with shredded mozzarella cheese and return to the oven. Bake for an additional 5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Once out of the oven, garnish with fresh basil leaves. Serve hot and enjoy!
