Ingredients

3 ripe bananas, mashed

1 cup unsweetened applesauce

2 tablespoons pure maple syrup (optional, adjust if you want it sweeter)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 ½ cups whole wheat flour

½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon baking powder

½ teaspoon salt

½ cup dark chocolate chips or cacao nibs (dairy-free if desired)

½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9x5-inch loaf pan or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the mashed bananas, applesauce, maple syrup (if using), and vanilla extract. Mix until everything is well combined and smooth.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture. Stir just until everything is combined; be careful not to overmix.

Fold in the dark chocolate chips and nuts (if using).

Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and even out the top with a spatula.

Bake in the preheated oven for 45-55 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Once done, remove from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.
