Monkey bread, often referred to as "bubble bread" or "monkey pull-apart bread," is a sweet pastry that consists of small pieces of dough rolled in cinnamon and sugar, baked together in a bundt pan. The history of monkey bread dates back to the 19th century, with its roots believed to be connected to Eastern European cooking traditions. The name "monkey bread" is thought to come from the playful act of pulling apart the pieces of dough, much like monkeys picking at their food.

Ingredients

2 cans (16 oz each) refrigerated biscuit dough

1 cup brown sugar

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

1/2 cup dried cranberries or raisins (optional)

1 cup powdered sugar for icing

2 tablespoons milk (for icing)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a bundt pan with cooking spray or butter generously.

Prepare the Biscuit Dough: Open the biscuit dough cans and cut each biscuit into quarters. Set aside in a large mixing bowl.

Mix Sugar and Spices: In a separate bowl, mix the brown sugar, granulated sugar, and cinnamon until well combined.

Coat the Biscuit Pieces: Sprinkle the sugar mixture over the biscuit pieces. Drizzle the melted butter and vanilla extract over the dough, and toss until all pieces are well-coated. If using, add in the chopped nuts and dried fruits, and mix gently.

Layer in the Bundt Pan: Layer the coated biscuit pieces into the prepared bundt pan. Press down lightly as you go to ensure they fit snugly.

Bake: Place the bundt pan in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Cool and Flip: Allow the monkey bread to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Carefully invert the bundt pan onto a serving plate and let the bread fall out.

Prepare the Icing: In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar and milk until smooth. Drizzle over the warm monkey bread for added sweetness.

Serve: Pull apart the delicious, warm monkey bread and enjoy it with family and friends at your holiday breakfast gathering!
