Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 cup brown sugar, packed

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup chocolate chips (semi-sweet or milk chocolate)

1/2 cup chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans, optional)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract (to add later when baking)

1 large egg (to add later when baking)

1/2 cup butter, softened (to add later when baking)

Instructions

Prepare the Jar: Start by selecting a clean, dry mason jar that can hold at least 1 quart. It's best to use a wide-mouth jar for easy layering and removal of ingredients.

    Layer the Ingredients:

      - Begin by adding the 2 cups of flour into the jar, pressing it down gently so it settles nicely at the bottom.

        - Next, pour in the packed brown sugar, ensuring it's firmly packed to avoid air pockets.

          - Add the granulated sugar on top of the brown sugar layer.

            - Carefully sprinkle in the baking soda and salt, making sure to distribute them evenly.

              - Finally, layer the chocolate chips and chopped nuts (if using) on top.

Seal the Jar: Close the jar with its lid tightly to keep the ingredients fresh. You can also add a decorative label with baking instructions for the recipient if you plan on giving this as a gift.

                  Instructions for Baking:

                    - When you're ready to bake, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

                      - In a mixing bowl, combine the cookie mix from the jar with 1 large egg, 1/2 cup softened butter, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Mix until well combined.

                        - Drop spoonfuls of the cookie dough onto a lined baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are golden brown. Remove from oven and let cool for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Enjoy: Once cooled, your homemade chocolate chip cookies are ready to be enjoyed! Serve them with a glass of cold milk for the ultimate treat.
