Ingredients

9-12 lasagna noodles

2 cups ricotta cheese

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

1 ½ cups grated Parmesan cheese

1 egg (beaten)

2 cups marinara sauce

1 pound ground beef (or Italian sausage)

1 medium onion (finely chopped)

2 cloves garlic (minced)

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried basil

Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Prepare the Noodles: Cook the lasagna noodles according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and lay them flat on a clean kitchen towel.

Cook the Meat Mixture: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, and sauté until softened (about 3-4 minutes). Add the ground beef (or sausage) and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spatula as it cooks. Drain excess fat if necessary. Stir in marinara sauce, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5 minutes.

Mix the Cheese Filling: In a large bowl, combine ricotta cheese, 1 ½ cups mozzarella, 1 cup Parmesan, and the beaten egg. Mix well and season with salt and pepper.

Assemble the Lasagna Cake: In a 9-inch round cake pan, spread a thin layer of marinara sauce on the bottom. Place a layer of lasagna noodles to cover the bottom. Spread half of the ricotta mixture over the noodles, followed by half of the meat sauce. Repeat the layers: noodles, ricotta mixture, meat sauce. Finish with a layer of noodles topped with marinara sauce.

Top It Off: Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese over the top of the lasagna cake.

Bake: Cover the cake pan with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbling and golden.

Cool and Serve: Allow the lasagna cake to cool for 15 minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired. Slice like a cake and serve warm.
