Lasagna has a long and storied history that dates back to ancient civilizations. The earliest known references to lasagna can be traced to the Greeks and Romans, who prepared a dish called "Laganon" made of layers of pasta and sauce. Over the centuries, lasagna has evolved significantly, particularly in Italy, where regional variations emerged, showcasing local ingredients and culinary traditions. From the rich meat sauces of Bologna to the lighter vegetable-filled versions of the Mediterranean coast, lasagna has become a canvas for creativity and comfort.

Ingredients

12 lasagna noodles

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 pound ground beef

1 pound Italian sausage, casings removed

1 onion, finely chopped

4 cloves garlic, minced

2 cans (15 oz each) crushed tomatoes

2 cans (6 oz each) tomato paste

2 teaspoons dried basil

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon sugar

Salt and pepper to taste

15 oz ricotta cheese

1 egg

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

4 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Cook Noodles: In a large pot, bring water to a boil and cook lasagna noodles according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and lay them flat on a baking sheet.

Prepare Meat Sauce: In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add ground beef and Italian sausage, cooking until browned. Add chopped onion and garlic, sautéing until the onion is translucent (about 5 minutes).

Add Tomatoes: Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, basil, oregano, sugar, salt, and pepper. Reduce heat and let simmer for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Mix Ricotta: In a separate bowl, mix ricotta cheese, egg, and grated Parmesan cheese until well combined. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper.

Layer Ingredients: In a 9x13 inch baking dish, spread a thin layer of the meat sauce. Place three lasagna noodles over the sauce. Spread 1/3 of the ricotta mixture over the noodles, then sprinkle with 1 cup of mozzarella cheese. Repeat layering: sauce, noodles, ricotta mixture, and mozzarella until all ingredients are used, finishing with a layer of meat sauce topped with the remaining mozzarella cheese.

Bake: Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

Cool and Serve: Allow the lasagna to cool for about 10 minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired.
