Ingredients

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

1/2 cup powdered sugar

Zest of 1 large orange

1 teaspoon ground cardamom

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Optional: extra powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lining a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Cream the Butter: In a large mixing bowl, use an electric mixer to cream together the softened butter and powdered sugar until smooth and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.

Add Zest & Spices: Mix in the orange zest and ground cardamom, blending until well combined.

Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Gradually add the dry mixture into the butter mixture, stirring until just combined.

Add Vanilla: Drizzle in the vanilla extract and mix until the dough forms a cohesive ball. If the dough is too crumbly, you can add a teaspoon of orange juice to help bind it.

Shape Cookies: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to cut out your desired shapes and place them on the prepared baking sheet.

Chill (Optional): For a firmer texture, refrigerate the cut-out cookies for about 15 minutes before baking.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. Be careful not to overbake to maintain their shortbread texture.

Cool: Once baked, remove from the oven and let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Dust with Sugar: Optionally, dust the cooled cookies with extra powdered sugar for an elegant finish.
