Ingredients

For the Patty Melt:

1 lb ground beef (80/20 for better flavor)

1 medium onion, thinly sliced

4 slices of Swiss cheese

4 slices of rye bread (or your favorite bread)

2 tablespoons butter

Salt and pepper to taste

For the Secret Sauce:

1/2 cup mayonnaise

2 tablespoons ketchup

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

1 tablespoon pickle relish

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

Prepare the Secret Sauce:

In a bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, Dijon mustard, pickle relish, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix until well combined. Set aside.

      Cook the Onions:

In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 10-12 minutes or until they become caramelized and golden brown. Remove from the pan and set aside.

          Cook the Patties:

In the same skillet, increase the heat to medium-high. Form the ground beef into two equally sized patties, season with salt and pepper on both sides. Cook the patties for about 3-4 minutes on each side for medium-rare, or until your desired doneness. In the last minute of cooking, place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty to melt.

              Assemble the Patty Melt:

Butter one side of each slice of rye bread. On the unbuttered side of two slices, spread a generous amount of the secret sauce. Layer one patty with melted cheese and half of the caramelized onions, then top with the other slice of bread (buttered side up).

                  Grill the Patty Melt:

In the same skillet, place the assembled sandwich and grill over medium heat for about 3-4 minutes. Flip carefully and grill the other side until golden brown and crisp, about another 3-4 minutes.

                      Serve:

Slice the patty melt in half and serve with additional secret sauce on the side for dipping. Enjoy alongside fries or a crisp salad!
