Salisbury steak has a rich history dating back to the 19th century, where it was initially created by Dr. James Salisbury, an American physician who believed in the health benefits of ground beef. His version was a simple preparation, often served with vegetables and gravy, aimed at providing a nutritious meal. Over the years, Salisbury steak has evolved, becoming a staple in American cuisine, often associated with school cafeterias and classic diners.

Ingredients

1 lb ground beef

1/4 cup breadcrumbs

1/4 cup chopped onion

1 clove garlic, minced

1 large egg

1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

1 tsp salt

1/2 tsp black pepper

2 cups sliced mushrooms

1 packet (10.5 oz) brown gravy mix

1 cup beef broth

1 tbsp soy sauce

1 tbsp olive oil

Optional: fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined.

Form the mixture into 4 to 6 patties, depending on your preferred size.

In a skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Brown each patty on both sides for about 2-3 minutes per side. This step adds flavor but can be skipped if you're short on time.

In the slow cooker, layer the sliced mushrooms at the bottom.

Place the browned patties on top of the mushrooms.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the brown gravy mix, beef broth, and soy sauce. Pour the gravy mixture over the patties in the slow cooker.

Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours or high for 3-4 hours until the patties are cooked through and tender.

Once finished, carefully remove the patties and set them aside. If desired, you can thicken the gravy by mixing a tablespoon of cornstarch with water and stirring it into the slow cooker on high for about 15 minutes.

Serve the Salisbury steak warm, topped with the mushroom gravy. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
