Ingredients

  • 16 ounces fresh part-skim mozzarella cheese cut into sticks
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour for dredging
  • 1 large egg beaten
  • 2 cups panko breadcrumbs for extra crunch
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes optional for heat
  • 2 cups marinara sauce store-bought or homemade
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil for frying
  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Begin by preparing the mozzarella sticks. Dredge each mozzarella stick in all-purpose flour, shaking off any excess, then dip it into the beaten egg, and finally coat it with panko breadcrumbs mixed with Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and crushed red pepper flakes. Ensure each stick is well-coated for maximum crunch.
  • Place the coated mozzarella sticks on a baking sheet and freeze them for at least 15 minutes. This step helps in achieving that perfect stretchy texture when frying.
  • In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, carefully add a few mozzarella sticks at a time, avoiding overcrowding the pan. Fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.
  • Using a slotted spoon, transfer the fried mozzarella sticks to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Season with salt and pepper while they are hot.
  • Meanwhile, heat the marinara sauce in a small saucepan over low heat until warmed through. Serve the mozzarella sticks hot, accompanied by the warm marinara sauce for dipping.

Notes

Tip 1: For extra flavor, add Parmesan cheese to the breadcrumb mixture.
Tip 2: Store leftover mozzarella sticks in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days; reheat in the oven to retain crispiness.
Variation: Try adding herbs like fresh basil or oregano to the breadcrumbs for a unique twist.
