Ingredients

For the Patty:

1 pound ground beef (80/20 blend)

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

Salt and pepper to taste

4 slices of Swiss cheese

For the Secret Sauce:

1/2 cup mayonnaise

2 tablespoons ketchup

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon pickle relish

Salt and pepper to taste

For the Assembly:

8 slices of rye bread (or your choice of bread)

1 medium onion, thinly sliced

2 tablespoons butter

Optional: lettuce and tomato slices for garnish

Instructions

Make the Secret Sauce: In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, ketchup, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, pickle relish, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix well and set aside in the refrigerator to let the flavors meld.

Prepare the Patty: In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Form the mixture into two large patties that are slightly larger than the bread, as they will shrink while cooking.

Cook the Patties: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 3-4 minutes on one side until browned. Flip them over and place two slices of Swiss cheese on each patty. Cook for an additional 3-4 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the patties are cooked to your desired level of doneness.

Caramelize the Onions: In another pan, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are golden and caramelized, about 10-15 minutes. Remove from heat.

Assemble the Patty Melt: Butter one side of each slice of rye bread. In the same skillet used for the patties, place two slices of buttered bread, butter-side down. Spread a layer of secret sauce on the unbuttered sides of each slice. Top with a patty, a generous portion of caramelized onions, and the other two slices of bread, sauce-side down.

Grill to Perfection: Cook the assembled patty melts on medium heat for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until the bread is golden brown and crispy. Press down gently with a spatula for even grilling.

Serve: Slice each patty melt in half and serve with extra secret sauce on the side for dipping. Garnish with lettuce and tomato slices if desired.
